Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday announced, that wearing seat belts is mandatory for all including rear seated passengers from now on.

Taking to his social media handle, the Union Minister, Gadkari, shares a series of interviews with leading news channels where he talks about the importance of wearing seat belts.

“It will now be mandatory for all the people sitting in the car to wear seat belts, Gadkari tweeted.

He further says in one of the interviews that, there will be repercussions if anyone is found not wearing seat belts.

“The passengers who won’t wear seat belts will be fined,” the Union Minister said.

An official guideline regarding the same will be released within three days, he further stated.

The Union Minister also informed that from now on there will be safety beeps installed in the rear seats along with the front seats of the car which will start indicating through a specific sound or alarm when the seat belt is not buckled by the passengers.

The Union Minister gave the statement after former Tata Sons Chairman and famous industrialist Cyrus Mistry met with an accident that led to his death on Sunday evening.

 It has been reported that Cyrus Mistry was seated at the rear seat and was not wearing the seat belt.

According to the Palghar Police, Mistry was travelling with three others from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when his ill-fated car hit a divider following which Cyrus and another person named Jahangir Dinshaw Pandole died on the spot.
