Disaster in Arunachal Pradesh: Raging Rivers and Collapsing Hills

Dark, roiling clouds descended over Arunachal Pradesh without warning, unleashing pre-monsoon deluges “like a bomb.” Rivers swelled overnight, their normally placid currents transforming into churning torrents.

In villages perched on steep slopes, roofs shook under the hammer-blows of rain; mud-clad streets vanished as water gushed through alleyways. Residents speak of a sky that seemed to open in fury, sending walls of water barreling through low-lying settlements.

Flash Flood in Daporijo: Streets Turned Rivers

In Daporijo’s market district, eyewitness videos on Facebook show shopkeepers scrambling as water surged past knee-height. Makeshift stalls, once laden with fresh produce and household goods, were swept away in minutes, their contents tumbling downstream in a muddy cascade .

Desperate calls for sandbags and boats rang out across WhatsApp groups; volunteers raced to cordon off choke-points, only to be overrun by the relentless flow.

Further north, the Sigin River burst its banks, engulfing Polo Colony, Sigum Rijo, and Bukpen Colony in a watery death-grip . More than 80 homes now stand half-submerged, their belongings floating like driftwood.

Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo ordered immediate evacuations under prohibitory notices, but many families lingered on their porches, powerless spectators as the river claimed rooms and memories.

In West Kameng district, Jamiri’s slopes gave way under the unrelenting downpour. At dawn, a massive landslide thundered onto the Bomdila - Tawang road, sending boulders plummeting and clouds of dust billowing skyward . Motorists and trucks - some carrying relief supplies, found themselves marooned between walls of earthen rubble.

With power lines snapped and satellite phones dead, stranded travelers huddled in vehicles, praying for rescue as heavy equipment struggled to clear a path.

Statewide Risk: A Red Alert from the IMD

Late on May 30, the India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Arunachal Pradesh through May 31, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall driven by a low-pressure system over Bangladesh .

Meteorologist Dr. Neha Choudhary cautioned, “Saturated hill slopes and additional downpours create a cascade effect: today’s landslide scars become tomorrow’s flash-flood channels.” With ground water tables at record highs, any further deluge could trigger secondary slides and inundate escape routes.

Beyond the main highways, the lifelines to remote hamlets have snapped. In West Siang and eastern Changlang, minor slips have blocked narrow access roads, leaving villages cut off and dark as diesel generators sputter out . Local administrations have activated emergency helplines and deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to staging areas.

But until major clearances, dozens of communities remain stranded, reliant on improvised bamboo rafts and community solidarity.

As midnight curfews enforced safety zones, mothers like Rani Lama of Polo Colony bundled her two young children onto a makeshift dinghy, paddling through chest-high currents to safer ground. “I packed our valuables in a plastic bag,” she said, her voice trembling. “But every splash felt like the house’s heartbeat fading.”

Frustration increases: residents blame delayed earth-mover deployments and lament what they call betrayal by the mountain gods. Yet amid the chaos, neighbours share rations and roof space, trading stories and tea as dawn’s rescuers inch closer.

Arunachal’s pre-monsoon onslaught is more than a weather event; it is a stark omen for the coming monsoon months. The state stands at a crossroads: invest now in early-warning systems, slope stabilization, and rapid-response infrastructure, or brace for repeated disasters that will grow deadlier each year.

In the fading light, a lone house perches on a narrowing ridge, windows dark against a rain-lashed sky: a silent testament to both nature’s might and humanity’s urgent call to prepare or perish…
