Manipur Government Cracks Down on Misuse of 'Press' Insignia, Tightens Access to Conflict Zones
To counteract the unauthorized usage of "PRESS" inscribed jackets, vests, and stickers, the Manipur government has enacted a policy permitting only individuals holding valid IDs from media houses and accreditation cards from regional or national governments to utilize these items, as announced on Tuesday.
The directive, issued by the Home Commissioner of Manipur, T. Ranjit Singh, responds to credible information regarding the misuse of such items amidst the prevailing law and order issues in the state. The notification highlighted serious concerns about the likelihood of these garments and stickers being exploited by antisocial elements and unauthorized individuals. These entities could potentially gain easy access to sensitive areas, engaging in inflammatory acts or disseminating information in an unprofessional manner. This misconduct, if unchecked, could exacerbate the current crisis, fostering antagonism and counterproductive outcomes.
In light of this, the state government is compelled to implement immediate protective actions, establishing a robust monitoring mechanism at critical points surrounding areas of unrest. This move aims to preclude any misinformation and maintain decorum in reporting by restricting entry to unauthorized reporters in violence-stricken zones.
Furthermore, access to these areas for media coverage will be exclusively granted to individuals wearing items marked with the “PRESS” inscription. The government has asserted that non-compliance with these rules will attract legal repercussions, enforced without exceptions.
The notification also urges District Magistrates and state law enforcement agencies to facilitate the efficient execution of this directive, reinforcing law and order during these turbulent times.
