Increase in the temperature of water in the North Atlantic Ocean could lead to change in climate pattern worldwide

The temperature of water in the North Atlantic Ocean has been increasing in the last few months, reported the CNN.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the temperature of the ocean has become "extreme" so much so that in some areas, water temperatures are up to 5 degrees Celsius (9 Fahrenheit) hotter than usual.

Climate scientists said according to the preliminary data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) showed the average temperature at the ocean’s surface has been at 21.1C since the start of April – beating the previous high of 21C set in 2016.

Many scientists and researchers have claimed the situation as alarming.

Mika Rantanen, a researcher at the Finnish Meteorological Institute while speaking to CNN, said the heatwave is “very exceptional and that it is  “currently the strongest on Earth.”

While Richard Unsworth, an associate professor of biosciences at Swansea University in the UK and a founding director of Project-Seagrass, called the Atlantic heat wave “totally unprecedented.”

It is "way beyond the worst-case predictions for the changing climate of the region. It’s truly frightening how fast this ocean basin is changing,” he told CNN.

The soaring temperature in parts of the North Atlantic Ocean has sparked concern about the impacts in marine life in the region and also the air temperature worldwide.

According to a climate article by NASA, "the effects of ocean warming include sea level rise due to thermal expansion, coral bleaching, accelerated melting of Earth's major ice sheets, intensified hurricanes, and changes in ocean health and biochemistry."

Earlier this month, thousands of dead fish washed up on the Texas coast which according to the scientists is because of the rising ocean temperatures, as warmer water is able to hold less oxygen.

One of the main reasons for the increasing of sea surface temperatures and rising sea level is due to the greenhouse effect.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the sea surface temperatures are rising, contributing to the rise in sea level, as more energy is being trapped from the sun by the emission of greenhouse gases and the oceans are absorbing more heat.

This change in the ocean temperatures and currents brought about by the climate change will affect the overall climate patterns of the world.

For instance, warmer waters will result in stronger storms in the tropics causing damage to life and property.

The after effects which is the rise in sea level and stronger storm will be much more relevant in the coastal areas.
