Leonardo DiCaprio, the Titanic actor has been working from a long time as an environmentalist. At the of 24 years, in the year 1998, Leo started the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, a non profit organization to support organizations and projects working towards the welfare of the environment such as by combating climate change, protecting wildlife, forest conservation etc.

The foundation has supported over 200 organizations across 50 countries and has helped to preserve over 35 million acres of land and 5,000 miles of coastline.

The Oscar winning Hollywood actor is often seen sharing posts related to the environment in his social media handle. In the last post of his Instagram, the actor posted about the end of poaching of the one horned Rhinoceros found in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park.

In his social media post, Leonardo praises the efforts of the Government of Assam in putting an end to poaching of the Endangered Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park in the state in 2022.

“In 2021, the government of the Indian state of Assam set out to end the poaching of the Endangered Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park following the killing of around 190 animals for their horns between 2000 and 2021. In 2022, they met their goal and no rhinos were poached in the area for the first time since 1977,” the actor wrote.

“Kaziranga National Park is home to 2,200 Greater One-horned Rhinos, which is about two-thirds of the world’s population. This triumph in India also comes with more good news, as @wwf (World Wildlife Fund) also reports that the world population of the rare rhino soared to around 3,700 from about 200 at the turn of the 20th century,” he added.

The Assam state government on January 1 announced that for the first time since 1977, there was not a single poaching of the endangered animal in the state in 2022.

The end of the poaching was possible after the Assam government’s initiative to form a special Anti-poaching task force back in July 2021. The number of poaching cases after that in the same year came to as low as just one case in 21 years.

In the same year, the CM said there are myths in some sections of the society that leads to killing/poaching of the endangered animal and in regards to that, the CM burned 2500 Rhino horns in September 2021 which has been recovered and preserved by them for the past four decades.

Following the actor’s post, the CM of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his Twitter handle on Friday and invited the Hollywood actor and ardent environmentalist, Leonardo DiCaprio to the Kanziranga National Park.

The CM wrote, "Preserving wildlife is integral to our cultural identity."

“We are dedicated to persevering and safeguarding our rich cultural heritage. Thank you for your kind words, @LeoDiCaprio, and I extend a warm invitation to you to visit @kaziranga_ and Assam,” he added.

Earlier, on January 2022, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen had also praised the efforts of putting an end to the poaching of the endangered Rhino.

According to the last survey conducted in the month of March 2022, the number of the endangered animal in the park have seen a great rise i.e., it stands at 2,613 as compared to the survey conducted back in 2018.
