Cocaine found in the White House's West Wing entry area.
Cocaine found in a cubby hole in the White House's West Wing entry area on Sunday night.
Speaking at a daily press briefing on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday that the area where the cocaine was discovered is a "heavily travelled area where West Wing visitors come through" of the White House.
The Secret Service is currently investigating the matter by going through the visitor logs and camera footage.
In regard to this, the press secretary said, the case is under investigation by the Secret Service and it is in their purview.
"We have confidence that the Secret Service is going to get to the bottom of this," she said.
According to reports, the powder was found by US Secret Service agents in a small, clear plastic bag on the ground during a routine inspection.
During the discovery, the President of USA, Joe Biden and his family were at Camp David in Maryland.
Reportedly, a preliminary test confirmed the substance was cocaine.
The Secret Service said in a statement on Tuesday that the White House was closed as a precaution after the substance was discovered.
“The item was sent for further evaluation and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending,” the Secret Service said.
Cocaine is a highly addictive drug derived from coca or prepared synthetically, if taken/consumed can have serious effects on one's health.
The West Wing is a large, multi-level part of the White House that contains the offices of the president of the United States, including the Oval Office and the Situation Room.
It also houses the offices of the vice-president, the White House chief of staff, the press secretary, and hundreds of other staff who have access.
