In a massive boost to infrastructure development in the country's Northeast, the Central Government has sanctioned the construction of 91 roads in the strategically crucial state of Arunachal Pradesh.

These roads, spanning an approximate total of 3200 kilometres across several districts, have been greenlit by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The project is expected to foster socio-economic growth, increase accessibility to remote regions, and significantly improve overall connectivity within the state.

"The Centre's approval for the new roads underlines our commitment to ensure holistic development in Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeastern region at large," said Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. "This move is a crucial part of our broader agenda to bridge infrastructural gaps and integrate the Northeast more closely with the rest of India."

The new roads will be constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), a rural connectivity scheme initiated by the government in 2000. So far, the PMGSY has connected over 1.5 lakh villages across India with all-weather roads, significantly changing rural landscapes and livelihoods.

The sanctioned roads will spread across 12 districts, including East Siang, West Siang, Upper Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, Lohit, and Changlang, among others. The allocation of Rs 3500 crore for the project underlines the Centre's commitment to enhancing infrastructural development in the state.

Beyond their economic impact, these roads also hold immense strategic importance due to Arunachal Pradesh's location along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. With increased connectivity, the mobility of troops and logistics in the region will be significantly enhanced, thereby strengthening India's defence preparedness along the border.

Residents of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly those living in remote and isolated areas, have welcomed this development. "These roads will revolutionise transportation and accessibility in the region," said Chowna Mein, Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. "They will open up new avenues for tourism, make healthcare and education more accessible, and stimulate growth in local industries."

Local business owners also see the move as a potential boon for the state's burgeoning tourism sector. "Improved road connectivity will undoubtedly attract more tourists to our beautiful state, leading to increased business opportunities for locals," said Tsering Wange, a local tour operator.

The implementation of this project, however, will be closely monitored, considering the challenging terrain and frequent landslides in Arunachal Pradesh that can hamper road construction and maintenance.

The sanctioning of these 91 roads, therefore, represents more than an infrastructural upgrade; it is a significant step towards the integration of Arunachal Pradesh with the broader Indian growth story. It also underscores the government's commitment to fostering the economic and strategic potential of the Northeastern region of the country.
