What is Meta's ‘Threads’ and how it is a threat to Twitter?

Facebook and Instagram- parent Meta on Wednesday launched a new app called Threads.

The launch took place after confirming its plans for the app just three months ago, as reported by CNN.

On the very first day itself, the app received five million sign-ups and about 30 million users as of Thursday, making a milestone in the history of apps.

Not just the general public even the celebrities could be seen signing up in the newly launched app.

So what is Meta's Threads?

The app Threads is an Instagram’s text-based conversation app. In simple terms, it's just like Twitter where one can have a conversation directly through texts.

According to the app, "Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world."

How to sign up in the Threads app?

All you need is an Instagram account to sign up in the newly launched app Threads.

Instagram users after downloading the Threads app, could log in with the same login details as their Instagram account and also have the access to the same friends and followers, or add new ones.

However, if one feels like deleting their account for life, then he/she will have to delete their whole instagram account as well.

Now the question comes how is Threads a threat to Twitter?

As stated earlier, Meta's Threads is very similar to Twitter. Both have newsfeeds, heart-shaped 'like' feature, content and the repost options.

The only differences are in Twitter, there is 'retweets' but here its called 'reposts' and tweets is called 'threads' here.

Now with sign up comes along the followers, new as well old ones from the account holder's Instagram account, this is also one of the biggest threats to Twitter.

For instance, within just less than 24 hours of its launch, some 30 million users signed up in the app and this is basically the two billion Instagram existing users of Meta who directly linked their accounts to Threads app.

This will result in the rapid growth of users in the Threads app.

With Elon Musk taking over Twitter and started laying off Twitter staff, Twitter users and employees have been dealing with continuous instability.

Following Musk's take over, he made various changes in Twitter.

For example, Twitter accounts with the blue tick or verified accounts now have to pay a certain amount of money to remain a verified user. This led to account impersonations and there was a lot of sharing of misinformation.

Similarly, it even labelled trusted news organisations such as the BBC as “state-owned” media.

So with Threads coming into the picture, it is indeed a threat to Twitter.

However, the similarity allowed Twitter to threaten to sue Mark Zuckerberg's Threads claiming the app as a “copycat app”.

But Mark Zuckerberg said unlike Twitter, Threads is full of positivity.

“We are definitely focusing on kindness and making this a friendly place,” he wrote on his Threads account.
