RBI reveals 76% of Rs 2000 notes in circulation returned to banks since withdrawal announcement.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) informed  that it has received 76% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes that were in circulation post its announcement of withdrawal i e., as on May 19.

The apex bank has now urged the general public to exchange or deposit the remaining notes within the next three months before September 30, 2023.

According to the RBI press release, the total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation had decreased to Rs 3.56 lakh crore as on May 19 from Rs 3.62 lakh crore as on March 31.

It said that according to the data received from the banks, the total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes which have been returned between the announcement on May 19 and till June 30 is Rs 2.72 lakh crore.

"Consequently, Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as at the close of business on June 30 stood at Rs 0.84 lakh crore,” it said.

“Data collected from major banks indicates that out of the total banknotes in ?2,000 denomination received back from circulation, about 87% is in the form of deposits and the remaining around 13% has been exchanged into other denomination banknotes,” the RBI said.

The RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation as part of its ‘clean note policy’ on May 19.
