President Droupadi Murmu inaugurates supercomputer facility at IIT Guwahati and various other projects in her two day maiden visit to Northeast India.

The President inaugurated the Supercomputing facility Param Kamrupa and laboratory called SAMEER for the design and development of high power microwave components at the Indian Institute of technology in Guwahati on October 13.

The President also virtually inaugurated Dhubri Medical College and Hospital and laid the foundation stones for two Zonal Institutes of National Institute of Virology (NIV) at– (i) Dibrugarh, Assam and (ii) Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh on the occasion.

“I am glad that IIT Guwahati has made the region and the nation proud as seen from its achievements in the national and international arena, in a short span of its existence,” said President Murmu.

She also said that since IIT Guwahati is the only IIT in the Northeastern region, it has the responsibility of nurturing other institutions in the region, work with the state government and defence forces, and provide technological solutions to the region to prevent natural calamities from recurring.

Speaking on the occasion, the President also said that today, the North Eastern Region of India is making big strides towards development and is making extraordinary efforts to provide the high quality healthcare and education systems to the people of the region and the country. She noted that the government of Assam is further providing support to IIT Guwahati to set up an advanced multispecialty hospital. She said that it will serve as an example for other esteemed institutes in the country to undertake similar initiatives.

Apart from these, President Murmu on October 14 on her last day of her maiden visit, also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for the various projects of Government of Assam and Union Ministries of Road Transport & Highways, Petroleum & Natural Gas and Railways from Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati. These include inauguration of Railhead Depot of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. at Moinarbond, Silchar and two highway projects; laying of foundation stones for - 100 model Secondary Schools in the tea garden areas of Assam; 3000 model Anganwadi centers; two highway projects; and modern Cargo-cum-Coaching Terminal at Aghtori, Guwahati. The President also flagged off a train from Guwahati to Lumding Pass upto Shokhuvi (Nagaland) and Mandipathar (Meghalaya).

Speaking on the occasion, the President wished for the success of projects related to health, education, railways, road construction, petroleum and women empowerment which were launched today.

She further said that the successful implementation of these schemes will provide new business and employment opportunities, increase transportation facilities and strengthen the economy in the entire North Eastern Region including Assam.

President Murmu on the first day of her maiden visit to NE, i.e., on October 12 visited Tripura where she laid the foundation for Tripura National Law University and inaugurated the Tripura State Judicial Academy in Narsingarh, Agartala.

Apart from official work, the president also visited the famous Kamakhaya Temple in Guwahati and sought blessings from Ma Kamakhya on the morning of October 14.



The President of India Droupadi Murmu was on a maiden visit to the northeastern states, Tripura and Assam from October 12-14, 2022.
