Odisha train accident: Father refuses to believe his son was dead; finds him alive in the morgue.

Sometimes it's difficult to accept reality but we have to accept it anyway. In a similar situation which took place in the recent Odisha train tragedy was the story of a father who refused to believe his son, on board  Coromandel Express, had died in the accident.

This made him travel more than 230km in an ambulance to Balasore, trace him to a makeshift morgue, finds him alive but in an unconscious state and bring him back to Kolkata for further treatment, reported TOI.

Biswajit Malik (24) was reportedly found alinve in a morgue by his father, Helaram Malik and then was taken to Kolkata for further treatment.

Biswajit who is critically injured but in a stable condition underwent a knee surgery at SSKM Hospital's trauma care unit and will have to go another round of surgeries on Monday.

His father, Helaram, is a shopkeeper based in Howrah and had come to know about the accident hours after he dropped off Biswajit at Shalimar station on Friday.

As reported by TOI, Helaram called his son, and found out about Biswajit's status. Without any further delay, Helaramalong with a local ambulance driver, Palash Pandit and his brother-in-law Dipak Das left for Balasore and travelled over 230km that night but could not find Biswajit initially. However, he did not give up and the search was worth it in the end.

"We never gave up," Das said. "We went around asking people, hoping to get leads on where to go next. One person told us that if we could not find anyone in hospital, we should look at the Bahanaga high school, where the bodies were kept. We could not accept it, but went anyway."

"We were not allowed to see the bodies ourselves. A little later, a commotion broke out when someone noticed a victim's right hand shivering. Since we were right there, we happened to notice that this hand belonged to Biswajit, who was unconscious and injured badly. We immediately drove him in the ambulance to the Balasore hospital, where he was given some injections. Given his condition, they referred him to Cuttack Medical College Hospital, but we signed a bond and got him discharged," he added.

Throughout the journey towards Kolkata, Biswajit was unconscious, said the Ambulance driver Palash Pandit.

"We stopped again at 8.30am at SSKM Hospital, where he was stretchered in."

According to experts, rescue operations were done mainly by non-medical persons and hence, if an injured person was unconscious, unresponsive people might mistake such a person to be dead. (TOI)
