Manipur violence is being addressed internationally but not in our country, India; Its a Shame!-Jaya Bachchan.
In a recent interaction with the media, Bollywood actor and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan criticised the government for not addressing the Manipur unrest in the parliament.
She said, "Manipur's unrest is being addressed internationally but not in India. What more can I say. Its a shame. The government does not want to address the issue."
Talking about the discussion in the parliament in regards to the Manipur violence, Jaya added that, "The government is speaking about the issues in other states, but what about Uttar Pradesh and MP? They should explain what is happening in their states too. Anyway they won't have these state governments for very long.”
Speaking to ANI last week following the Manipur viral video, she said she couldn't watch the viral video of two women being paraded naked and she feels ashamed.
"I felt so bad, I couldn’t see the entire video. I was ashamed. This happened in May, but went viral now. But, no one has said a single word in sympathy. This is about women's safety. But you say things like we have selected 50 percent women for a panel,” Jaya Bachchan stated.
She added, “It's very frustrating. Every day something or the other is happening with women. In UP we don't get to know what happens there, Yogi Adityanath Ji never says. What is happening in the entire country with women? Such humiliation. It's very saddening."
The viral video of two women paraded naked in Manipur alongside a huge number of men sexually assaulting and dragging them to a field which came into limelight after almost two months saw outrage from across the country and even internationally.
Recently, the Manipur violence was addressed in the European Parliament.
The European Parliament urged the Government of India "to take all the necessary measures and make the utmost effort to promptly halt the ongoing ethnic and religious violence, to protect all religious minorities, such as Manipur’s Christian community, and to pre-empt any further escalation."
The resolution called on the government “to repeal the unlawful Armed Forces Special Powers Act in line with the recommendations of the UN Universal Periodic Review”.
It reiterated its call for human rights to be integrated into all areas of the EU-India partnership, including trade.
However, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India spokesperson Arindam Bagchi called the European move “unacceptable” and reflective of a “colonial mindset”, in a statement.
“Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order,” Mr. Bagchi said, and suggested that the EP should instead focus on its “internal issues".
