Manipur violence continues: Union Minister R K Ranjan Singh’s house set on fire.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs RK Ranjan Singh’s Kongba, Imphal house was stormed and set on fire by a mob of around 1200 people on Thursday night.
Reportedly, the Union Minister and his family were out of station when the incident took place.
Speaking to the news agency, ANI, the minister said, “I am currently in Kerala for official work. Thankfully, nobody got injured last night at my Imphal home. The miscreants came with petrol bombs and damage has been done to the ground floor and first floor of my home.”
“It is very sad to see what is happening in my home state. I will still continue to appeal for peace. Those indulging in this kind of violence are absolutely inhuman,” he added.
This is not the first time the Union Minister’s house has been attacked by a mob.
On May 25, a mob attacked the house of the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education, RK Ranjan Singh.
Fresh violence erupted on Wednesday in Manipur and nine people are said to be killed and 10 others injured.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh while speaking to the media on a press conference assured strict actions against the culprits involved in the fresh violence.
Singh further stated that the government is holding discussions at multiple levels and said that the governor had constituted a peace committee and consultation with peace committee members will start soon.
On May 3, a peaceful rally was organised by All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) condemning the Scheduled Tribe status demand by the majority Meitei community of the state which is when violence broke out in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district.
According to social media posts, the Meitei community started the violence demolishing the tribal’s houses, vehicles which resulted in clashes between the tribals and the Meitei community and displaced over 9,000 people from their villages.
The state government has also imposed ban on internet services which has been now extended till June 20.
