China defends its move of including Arunachal Pradesh in its new standard map; tells India

China on Wednesday in regards to the release of a new “standard map” for 2023 that India protested, said, it was “a routine practice” and asked New Delhi to “refrain from over-interpreting” it.

“It is a routine practice for China to exercise sovereignty in accordance with the law,” he said. “We hope the relevant side can stay objective and calm, and refrain from over interpreting,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin while asking about India's protest against their move.

China's government on Monday officially released the "2023 edition of the standard map of China” in which it continues to show the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh which China claims as South Tibet and Aksai Chin region, Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea.

Following the release of the map, in an interview with NDTV, the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday dismissed Beijing's "absurd claims" and said "putting out a map does not mean anything."

He said it is China's old habit of claiming other territories as their own.

"China has put out maps with territories (that are) not theirs. (It is an) old habit. Just by putting out maps with parts of India... this doesn't change in anything," the external affairs minister said.

"Our government is very clear about what our territories are. Making absurd claims does not make other people's territories yours," Jaishankar added.
