At least 17 killed after an under construction railway bridge collapsed in Mizoram.

While the whole country is waiting to witness the historic Chandrayaan-3 landing on the moon today, the people of Mizoram had to witness a tragic incident.


Reportedly, an under construction railway bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed on Wednesday, August 23.


According to initial reports, at least 17 workers died in the mishap.


However, as per latest report from AIR News Aizawl, the death toll rose to 26 and so far, 16 bodies have been recovered and 10 are still missing.


Chief Minister Zoramthanga took to his social media, X and wrote "Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations."


Rescue under progress.


While Prime Minister of India expressed his condolences and announced an ex gratia of  Rs 2 lakh to the next kin of each deceased and Rs 50000 to the injured.


"Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected. 

An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured," the office of the PM of India posted on their official X handle.
