All you need to know about the Shillong rally turned violence of October 28.

Recently, a video from Shillong got viral on social media where one could see amidst a rally, protesters started beating up people mercilessly.

Now, who are these people and what was the rally about?

On October 28, a rally was organised by the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) in Shillong, Meghalaya against the unemployment issue prevailing in the state.

The rally turned later into violence where the rally protesters whose faces were mostly covered with masks started beating up passers-by, spectators , innocent people and damaging vehicles for no absolute reason.

According to reports, the people who were beaten up were mostly Non-Khasis and they were beaten up in spite of the presence of the Police.

Reportedly, the Police had denied permission for the rally. However, the District Administration had granted permission causing a lack of coordination between the two.

The President of the FKJGP issued an apology over the unruly behaviour of the youths.

The President said, in spite of warning the protesters beforehand that the rally is supposed to be a peaceful one, the violence occurred. He further said that the reason can be because of the frustration of the youths who are unemployed for a long time now.

He also appealed to the youths to be "patient and to be cool and calm" asked them to believe in them so that they address their grievances at the earliest.

"We are sorry and we take responsibility for what happened", said the President.

District Magistrate Isawanda Laloo on Moday imposed Section 144 Cr.PC across Shillong city to prevent ‘surprise rallies’ by pressure groups.
